I wanted a low priced Blu-ray player primarily for the upconversion of my existing dvds and the occasional Blu-ray rental. My first two purchases (other models) went back to the store for interminable wait times at power up and menu, and freezing while playing dvd's. I've had this Toshiba for several weeks now and I love it. Unlike some other reviewers I haven't encountered the whine on loading discs and the response time of the remote and disk load is fantastic. My dvds look so good that the kids want to use the television in my room instead of the family television now. I rented a few Blu-ray discs to test out the players lag time on those discs and was really impressed. There seemed to be no difference at all. I hooked it up with an HDMI cable and it was ready to go. Better performance than a higher priced model I tried. If you're looking for a low cost everyday unit without needing all the possible bells and whistles, this is definitely the way to go.

The picture quality is great and the upconvert works fantastic. It is a very sharp looking player too. It can make a somewhat loud sound loading the disc but then not a sound from the player during a movie. The remote is very responsive too. We are extremely satisfied with this, I am still amazed at the clarity in the picture and would buy this again.

I was a bit scared of actually buying this BD player... Mainly because I live in Chile and several factors had to be taken into consideration, but BD player here are way too expensive (over $350 dollars).



As soon as I tried this BD player in my HDTV it started playing my movie right away, it took only seconds before I started watching the movie and sound was aazing too.



Upscaling is not bad at all. But one bad thing, for me (because I live in Chile) is that it won't play dvds other than sector 1 (here is 4) but that's not the BD player's fault, but over all I'm very happy for my purchase.. I got a great deal for low money.

This is a reasonably good Blu-ray DVD player. With extra memory and a suitable ethernet bridge, it will even do BD-Live to see extra content from the Internet What it will NOT do is streaming movies from places like NetFlix. This is very disappointing, indeed! In BD-LIVE the player will even stream previews of selected movies, where the technology is nearly identical to streaming movies. Why this player will not do streaming movies is a mystery to me. Many similarly priced Blu-ray players will. I suggest you buy one of those!

This product makes a great DVD player. But a lousy Blu-Ray player. The first day it worked out great both blu-ray discs and regular DVD's. But the very next day, trying both DVD's again at the bottom of the TV screen it's a little jookie. It shouldn't be this way if it's new. Then I called the Sony support team to help me with this problem. It took awhile to get the right person. If your in a hurry, expect to wait awhile til you get the right person. The person I had was a nice person and walked me thru it all. I updated my Blu-ray player and the person on the phone walked me thru that. He said, it might be my HDMI wire. So I ordered a HDMI wire any way. I am waiting to see if this does the trick or not. All 3 of my blu-ray movies are new. This is my first ever owning a blu-ray player. I thought since its a Sony product it would've been better. I expected more out of this product. But I am hoping that my HDMI wire would do the trick. Update: I added a new HDMI wire and it looks a lot better. I still notice a little jookiness but not as much. I think I can live with it.

 "Stopped playing Bluray discs after firmware update" 2010-01-03

The unit worked fine for 13 months (12 month warranty of course). I decided to upgrade to firmware v20 to maybe get some additional features/functionality. Now when I put in a Blueray disc, the player says "unknown". I spent 2 hrs on the phone with Sony to no avail. Now I have an overpriced DVD only player!

my tv is only 720p and with this player and a blu-ray movie the picture is great! if you have a 1080 tv- then the picture should even be better. but, whether its 720 or 1080 you will be happy with this player. and if you notice-the front is clean! (not a bunch of buttons n curves) and thats the way i like it! just clean n smooth.

ive used it with a 37inch lg lcd a 55 inch projection hatachi and a element 32 inch lcd.

nice picture with all of them (lg being the best) it also plays reg dvds and music cds.

and of course you can hook it to internet and enjoy blu-ray movie trivia etc-- plus it updates firmware if needed.

the only thing that would be a great idea, would be for it to have wifi!!!!!! I dont have the internet hooked to it now because I dont like wires running all over my house. so wifi would be great!

and for those who dont like the higher price tag of blu-ray movies---you can find good deals online! plus most blu-ray now come with digital copies also!! which i love! i put them on my ipod touch! and on my laptop! movies on the go----:)

They should include this with player or blockbuster should give you credit for it. Still haven't purchased it yet, so no info on how it works. Nice feature to have but a major ripoff from manufacturer. Paid around $170.00 player and they want $70.00 for a liitle chip is crazy.

I received this player as a gift and was happy as I have many samsung products in my home. I reviewed the quick start guide and played a movie. Great picture. The next thing I looked into was the wireless feature. I did not have a wireless adapter so I went out and bought one. Can you imagine my suprise when troubleshooting, and after going through the installation cd process two times, to have found out that the darn thing doesn't work with any wireless adapter, it has to be a samsung wireless adapter? This information is conveniently left out of the quick start guide.



Needless to say, I am extremely upset that I purchased an adapter based on what I read in the quick start guide only to find out later that it must be a samsung adapter. I feel I have been deceived and may not make another samsung purchase again.

I thought this was a pretty cost effective and stylish unit. It plays blurays and dvds really well. It was easy to use and set up netflix. On the downside there is a lag in the response of the player. There is a loud half second buzz when it turns on. You tube navigation is difficult. If you want wireless internet streaming you have to get a samsung network adapter. I hardwired mine to the network so it would be faster. The movies stream really well. After a minute load or so it plays straight through. I think overall though the player is middle of the road.

Cons : I have same problem with firmware update freezing my unit bdp-2500 and tech support no help and they want you to pay to fix it . I was able to get it reinstalled and it works now :-) but samsung has some issues with the firmware that can render your machine a doorstop . I have installed five additional samsung blu rays for customers with no problems yet, Pros: - the price point = great and for netflix = priceless ,and hopefully samsung will fix issues with firmware sooner than later,- dont buy refurb -it only has 90 day warranty

 "Great Picture and overall value" 2010-01-10

I bought this TV from local club store last week. I believe the club stores are the only place to find this particular model number, but from the research I did online, it is identical to the 52E77U.



Setting up the TV was extremely easy. First you have to attach the stand, then just plug in the power cable and your inputs and turn it on. The first thing that you see when you turn it on is an initial basic setup menu. Once you go through the few questions, then you are all set. I did spend a little time tweaking the settings as you would have to do with pretty much any TV you buy. I found a site that had some users posting their settings and I tried a few of those. I then made a few more adjustments and I found what I feel is the perfect setting combination. The picture quality is truly amazing, very vivid and clear, and everything in HD is just phenomenal.



As far as sound quality, I have not listened to the speakers at all as I am using a seperate receiver for the sound. I would not expect much in the way of quality as these types of TV's are built for picture quality, not sound, and really, I'd be fine if they did not even have speakers.



I cannot find a single thing to be negative about with this set, except for one very odd quirk. With my setup, I have my cable and PS3 running to my ONKYO receiver, which then has one output to the TV. Whenever I first turned on the TV, I got a message about sound not being compatible. I had seen this mentioned on another site, and all I had to do was turn the TV's volume control down to 0, and I never get the message.



One final thought. While doing research on Sharp LCD TV's, there was some mention of banding issues. Everything I could find said this issue was resolved and limitted to some run of screens at one of the factories. I have not noticed any flaws of any sort with my picture. I highly recommend this TV, at least, for the price I paid for it, you get more value than comparable Samsung, Sony, etc. models.

I just picked one of these sets up a few days ago at a club store after seeing its price just a couple hundred over the LC-46D65U I've had my eye on for the last year or so. The screen is good. No dead pixels, no blurring issues that I can see, and best of all, no perceptible input lag with my xbox. (this is the feature of the Aquos sets that was my primary interest in them)



Out of the box, the image quality was quite good but in need of tuning. The colors are not oversaturated as with many televisions. The menus are intuitive and easy to use so it took just a few minutes to adjust the temperature to what looks right to me. However, after 3-4 attempts, I still haven't struck the right balance with the gamma, contrast, and brightness. I am a little bit of a nut over these, however, so I wouldn't consider it a fault of the set. Overall, I would say the image quality is excellent.



Sound quality is terrible. I mean, it is embarrassingly bad. I have never heard a TV with worse speakers. And the TV that this is replacing is an Olevia that couldn't play in stereo without major distortion. This set is worse than that. The sound is tinny and shrill. It is about as high in fidelity as the cheap transducer in a laptop computer. There are menu options to adjust the bass and treble up and down, but even with treble cut as far as it'll go and bass set to the max, there is little to no change in the atrocious noise noise this thing puts out. The best I can guess is that the expectation by Sharp's marketing and engineers is that this set was never meant to play its own sound. Graciously, there are audio out jacks on the TV. If you have a home theater set, this is a non-issue. If you don't, be sure to budget in a decent set of powered speakers. The built in audio is simply unusable.



The input/output jacks are plentiful. I count 5 HDMI's, 2 YPbPr's, 2 RCA's, a VGA dsub, an s-video, and a serial port, as well as a stereo 1/8" jack, and as I meantioned, it has the ever-so-necessary audio output jacks, both in RCA and digital form factors. One HDMI port, one RCA input, and a USB service terminal are situated on a side panel, keeping them easily accessible for temporarily installed devices. The rest of the jacks are on the back of the unit, off to one side, with the power jack on the opposite side. It would have been nice to have these closer together and nearer to the center of the chassis. The included power cord is a measly 4 feet. I had to reorganize my runs around my entertainment center to accommodate this. It's not a major issue but it is needlessly annoying. If you don't have a plug immediately behind the set, you're going to need an extension cord.



The remote is neither the best nor the worst I've used. It's an awkward shape and I don't like the positioning of the channel and volume buttons but the buttons have a nice feel and the controls are instant and responsive.



All in all, I would say that it is a good set. The case looks good, the picture is crisp, clear, and fluid, and it's loaded with everything necessary to be the centerpiece of a solid home theater system. The minimal screen lag is great for gamers. The terrible treatment they've given the audio system precludes this set from being a standalone piece, however, and if your interest is in getting the most TV for your money, remember that this is not complete out-of-the box, and the savings it offers over comparable quality displays may well be eaten up in the purchase of a listenable audio rig.
